Louisville, Kentucky: Gunman kills five in bank shooting

According to reports, a shooting in downtown Louisville, KY left multiple people dead with several others wounded.

Local authorities confirmed that at least five people were killed in the shooting with "at least" six others sustaining non-fatal gunshot wounds. Police say the gunman reportedly had a connection to the location, possibly as a current or former employee. Witnesses say the shooter entered a board meeting and opened fire with police receiving calls about the shooter around 8:30 AM local time.

“This is happening around the country in a city daily,” said Rep. Keturah Herron of Kentucky. “Today was our turn in Louisville, KY. As we hold our community tighter there must be outrage and anger. We live in a war zone and we shouldn’t have to.”

The gunman, identified as Connor Sturgeon, started his attack around 8:30 a.m. at Old National Bank in downtown, authorities said. He opened fire as some employees met for a morning meeting before the bank was open to the public. Rebecca Buchheit-Sims, a manager at the bank, told CNN she watched the meeting virtually and witnessed her coworkers being slain.

Buchheit-Sims described Sturgeon as “extremely intelligent” and others who knew him told CNN they were shocked to see the violence, which launched a massive police response in the heart of one of America’s most populated cities. But prior writings by the gunman indicate he struggled to fit in before he joined the team at Old National Bank and was on the brink of being terminated when he entered the bank with a rifle.

Sturgeon had worked at the bank for more than a year, according to his LinkedIn profile. He livestreamed his attack on Instagram, a video that has since been removed from the platform.

Louisville Metro Police Chief Jacquelyn Gwinn-Villaroel said he did not have “any prior engagement” with police.
