Marvel President Breaks Silence About 'Black Panther' Sequel

Marvel's Black Panther quickly became the No. 1 movie in the world after its President's Day weekend release, as it grossed over $426 million worldwide -- and counting!

The movie stars Chadwick Boseman as T'Challa AKA Black Panther. Michael B. Jordan plays the antagonist Erik Killmonger and Lupita Nyong'o plays T'Challa's love interest Nakia. Other actors in the film include Danai Gurira, Forest Whitaker, Angela Bassett, Daniel Kaluuya, Letitia Wright, Sterling Brown, Winston Duke and more. Ryan Coogler directed the acclaimed project.

While speaking to Variety, Marvel president Kevin Feige spoke about the movie. "We always knew we wanted to do it someday," he said. "We always knew it was the manifest destiny of Marvel Studios to bring to life all facets of the Marvel universe...The minute we started talking about Black Panther, we brought up Chadwick. He really was the only actor we discussed."

He added: "I think it was 24 hours between saying his name in a creative story meeting and talking to his agent and getting on a phone with him and offering him the role of Black Panther, which he accepted."

Feige even revealed that he didn't even understand how much of an impact Black Panther would have until the trailer premiered at last year's Cinemacon. He said, “We were doing something that people had been waiting their entire lives to see,” Feige explained when saw people standing and cheering -- some even in tears -- after they watched the tease. “That was something that a white male that grew up in the United States can take for granted. And you don’t take that for granted anymore. Everyone deserves to see themselves reflected on that silver screen and the inspiration that comes from it.”

When the Marvel president was asked if he would want Coogler back to direct the sequel, Feige said, "I hope so." So Marvel, cut the check!
