BOSTON (WBZ-AM) -- Dustin Pedroia was an All-Star in 2013. He played 160 of a possible 162 games. In five years since, the Red Sox second baseman's averaged 98--just three this year, and he may be done.

Pedroia's still recovering from offseason knee surgery, and manager Alex Cora said he's heading home.

"Pedey's gonna go to Arizona," Cora said. "He's gonna do his rehab over there with the PT that helped him out through the offseason. We'd love him to be around here, but I think for now, it's better off for him to go over there, disconnect a little bit, just concentrate on himself. There's gonna be a few adjustments on the rehab, talking about hammy, core, and glutes."

Pedroia's 34 and due 40 million dollars the next three years after this season.

President of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski told NESN it's a complicated situation, since it's not like a player can have a minutes restriction in baseball.

"It's also not only nine innings, but it's tough, especially for a guy like Dustin who's an every day player--you don't have the type of regulation that you do in basketball with the minutes," Dombrowski said. "We think he will be fine per the doctor's instructions, he's just taking a little bit longer than we thought. Of course Dustin is determined to get back. I don't blame him, he's frustrated and anxious, but he's doing everything he can to get back as quickly as possible."
