BOSTON (WBZ-AM) -- In the year ahead, the MBTA is going to spend more money than ever before on improving tracks and trains across the entire system.

MBTA General Manager Luis Ramirez said the organization just spent more than ever on capital improvements across the T--$867 million on capital projects in the last fiscal year. For the current fiscal year, the goal is $1 billion. Ramirez said it's all about improving the system.

"I know there's a lot more to do, and I ask our customers to always be patient," Ramirez said. "We are working on a lot and this year is a good start on that road to recovery."

Ramirez said that, after the challenging winter of 2015, they realized there was a lot to fix. With a lot of help from the federal government, they'll be spending a lot of money to try to make the T more reliable and sustainable.

The plan will include improvements to the Red and Orange Lines, as well as the Green Line Extention.
