Boston City Officials Question Gas Infrastructure After Explosions

BOSTON, MA (WBZ-AM) -- Boston City Councilors want to make sure what happened in the greater Lawrence area last week, never happens in the hub.

After the multiple gas explosions and fires in the Merrimack valley, the city council wants to be proactive in examining Boston’s aging gas lines, to make sure they're up to snuff. They also want to ensure that proper safety procedures are in place.

The council took up the topic of the city's gas infrastructure during their meeting Wednesday at City Hall. Councilor Matt O'Malley tells WBZ NewsRadio1030 that a they'll convene a public hearing on the matter sometime this fall.

“We need to bring people together from City of Boston, our 1st responders, our public safety employees, our utility employees, the residents of Boston to come together and figure out what are we doing? What is that second, third, fourth step that we are taking to make sure we can do everything we possibly can, everything we conceivably can, to make sure that the streets are safe,” he said.

WBZ NewsRadio1030’s Kim Tunnicliffe reports.
