BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio)—Local police and fire departments in Massachusetts are going to receive extra federal funding to help with the response to the coronavirus pandemic.
The nearly $10 million funding is from the U.S. Department of Justice, and it is going to be distributed among more than 100 local and state public safety agencies.
Gov. Baker’s administration said the $9.6 million will help to equip staff with personal protective equipment (PPE). The funds will also pay for deep cleaning sanitation equipment for correctional facilities.
Each eligible agency can request up to fifty thousand dollars in federal funds.
For example, the Melrose Fire Department has requested forty-nine thousand dollars in order to pay for N95 masks, face shields and disinfectant backpack sprayers.
