BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Governor Maura Healey sent a letter to Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent on Tuesday, demanding nearly two thousand dollars in refunds for all Massachusetts households.
Governor Healey wrote that President Trump's "unconstitutional tariffs" cost residents millions and that each household should be refunded $1,745 for "financial harm" done.
"With approximately 2.8 million households in Massachusetts, my office estimates that $4,886,000,000 is owed to consumers in our state who shouldered the burden of increased costs. I call on the Trump Administration to immediately formulate a plan to refund tariff proceeds and put money back in the pockets of the hardworking people of Massachusetts,” Governor Healey wrote.
She came to the figure by using data from the U.S. Congress Joint Economic Committee, which was published last month, that estimated American consumers paid around $1,745 per family in tariff costs between February 2025 and January 2026.
"These tariffs wreaked havoc on our economy and increased costs for hardworking families and small businesses across Massachusetts," wrote Governor Healey.
Just over two weeks ago, the Supreme Court ruled that President Trump's emergency tariffs were illegal.
