Terrier Found Abandoned, 'Filthy' In Oxford Gets New Lease On Life

BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — A severely neglected and abandoned dog found in central Massachusetts last week is recovering at the Animal Rescue League of Boston.

They call the tiny, five-year-old silky terrier mix Ben, because he didn't have a name. He was found suffering from severe ear infections and dermatitis in Oxford, where he was wandering the streets.

"He was filthy, he was matted," ARL spokesperson Mike DeFina told WBZ NewsRadio's Karyn Regal. "His nails were grossly overgrown. He also had double ear infections and dermatitis."

The ARL hasn't found any "lost dog" reports that fit his description, and he was not microchipped.

What was done to Ben is a felony in the Commonwealth. Anyone with information is asked to contact Oxford Animal Control.

In the meantime, Ben is starting to trust people again. He is a little skittish, and squeaks when he wants attention.

"He's just adorable," DeFina said. "To think that he was just left to fend for himself, left for dead, it's just unimaginable."

He will undergo a behavioral evaluation, neutering, and vaccinations, and be put up for adoption from the ARL once he gets the OK from veterinarians.
