Big Papi Could Make Hall Of Fame Tuesday Night

BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — It's Big Papi's first chance at getting into Cooperstown on Tuesday night. Many are predicting the fan-favorite DH to waltz into the Baseball Hall of Fame, and that includes a writer that has locked horns with David Ortiz in the past: Boston Globe columnist Dan Shaughnessy.

"His clutch abilities...He's going to sail into the Hall of Fame first-ballot, in my belief," Shaughnessy told WBZ NewsRadio recently. But Shaughnessy himself didn't vote for Ortiz on his own ballot, part of his policy to never vote for any player who is even slightly connected to doping in baseball. Shaughnessy is excluding Ortiz because he was reportedly included on a never-released list of players who were using performance-enhancing drugs in 2003.

Ortiz denied the allegations, and was pressed by Shaughnessy in 2013 — their relationship soured after that.

"He's a guy who's remembered extremely fondly in this region, I mean everybody loves the guy — and that's hard-earned, I understand why they do," he said.

Ortiz was a part of three World Series-winning teams in 2004, 2007 and 2013, and was the World Series MVP in 2013, as well as a ten-time All Star.

Results from Cooperstown come out at 6:00 PM. 75% of voters need to vote for a player for them to make it into the Hall.
