BRAINTREE, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — A turkey giveaway at the Herb Chambers Ford of Braintree aimed to help out veterans, their families, and families of the fallen.

The event on Sunday was the fifth annual giveaway put on by the Arredondo Family Foundation.

Carlos Arredondo is well known as a hero of the Boston Marathon bombings.

According to the foundation’s website, Carlos “ran to help Jeff Bauman with whom he has formed a lasting bond.”

Carlos and his wife, Melida, started the foundation because of personal tragedy.

“We lost one child in the war in Iraq and his brother ended up taking his life as a result,” Melida said. “So, we help military families who are experiencing any suicide in their families — those that have lost somebody — as well as veterans by doing suicide prevention.”

Melida said the turkey giveaway is just another way to help out.

“One of the things that people don’t realize is that economics is one of the pillars of why a person might want to take their lives because of the stress of it,” Melida said. “It just compounds any other mental health issues that a person is going through. So, we’re happy to be able to provide a turkey.”
