CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Two Cambridge city councilors are looking to have the city’s departments stop using the social media platform X.

Councilors Ayah Al-Zubi and Patricia Nolan have introduced a resolution to have the city manager’s office bar 15 departments from posting or engaging on the website within 60 days.

This comes after the councilors called X owner Elon Musk a white nationalist, and accused him of assaulting the federal government in the form of Doge.

The councilors also allege that Musk eliminated guardrails against hate speech, harassment and disinformation on the site.

Elon Musk acquired the social media platform back in 2022 for approximately $44 billion when it was still known as Twitter.

Since owning the company, Musk has loosened content moderation rules and has rolled out its Grok AI chatbot which the councilors also criticize for generating sexualized deepfake images.

People who live in the city are conflicted with the demand as some think it’s too quick to implement.

“I do think that maybe 60 days is a little too short, realistically,” said one resident.

“The city should first establish and show that there’s another media and information source that people are using at similar rates,” said another resident.

A meeting discussing the resolution is expected to take place on Monday at Cambridge City Hall.
