QUINCY, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Several Bay State communities, in addition to regional transit authorities, recently received grants from the state, with an eye on expanding transportation options in those cities and towns.

One city expecting funding is Quincy, where officials will explore adding Bluebike service for residents. According to a recent study, Boston's Metropolitan Planning Organization, at Quincy's request, reviewed the matter to assist in making this a reality, including finding advantageous locations to add blue bike stations. Some residents think the bikes are a much-needed addition to the community.

"The Boston metro area very much needs additional alternative modes of transportation," one resident said.

A subsidiary of Lyft, Bluebikes have been a part of the Bay State ecosystem since 2011. Quincy already has a bicycle commission and has been designated a bicycle-friendly city by the League of American Bicyclists. Some residents are ecstatic about the initiative and the $250,000 grant provided to the state.

"I think that's fantastic, and I applaud the state of Massachusetts, and I hope that they continue this investment not only in the city of Quincy but all over the state of Massachusetts," another resident said.
