BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — On the weekend of International Women's Day, a few local Daisies got a chance to learn about careers in construction.

Girl Scout troops from all over eastern Massachusetts toured the headquarters of Suffolk Construction as they learned about opportunities in the industry. The event is part of the new Daisies Who Build program between Suffolk and the Girl Scouts of Eastern Mass.

Suffolk's Katherine Maloney says she wants girls to see construction as a career option.

"At a young age, I think career aspirations start to take seed and take you know plant at younger ages than we even think is possible," Maloney explained. "We want to make sure that we're sort of combating some of those stereotypes that might, you know, be in their minds of this isn't an industry that's accessible to me."

The 60 attendees met women who work for Suffolk, including many former Girl Scouts, before they participated in STEM activities. Karina says she's glad her daughter can meet women working in the industry.

"It's just like thinking about, you know, women in the workplace and like all the amazing things they can do and just making sure that our daughters can see those examples in real life."

Many of the former Suffolk employees are former Girl Scouts themselves, which is extra special for Betsy Calkins with the Girl Scouts of Eastern Massachusetts.

Betsy Calkins, the director of programs for Girl Scouts of Eastern Mass, says events like this are extra special because the young ladies get to see former Girl Scouts in their element.

"We really love to have them see themselves with these potential futures, and so both to see women up there and then women who were Girl Scouts who were in their shoes not that long ago is so meaningful."
