BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) – An international student is learning about the spirit of Thanksgiving through the kindness of her community.

Susana Orrego Villegas is from Colombia and studying at Harvard Medical School. While most Americans had their Thanksgiving Day plans locked down for a while, Villegas only planned on spending the day with her husband.

“It’s our first thanksgiving,” she said. “I want to share the tradition but we don’t know anyone.”

Villegas decided to share her thoughts on the Nextdoor app and to her surprise, she got hundreds of replies from people inviting her and her husband to their own family dinners.

Villegas picked one that is fairly close to her Brookline apartment and already knows what dish she will bring to the table.

“I will bring definitely Colombian coffee and some dessert from Colombia," she said.

While she plans on representing her own culture, Villegas cannot wait to sink her teeth into an American Thanksgiving Day turkey.

“In Columbia we don’t have turkey,” she said, “so it will be our first turkey.”
