SAUGUS, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — The Saugus location of Kelly's Roast Beef has shut down after an employee has contracted typhoid fever.

Dan Doherty, President of the Massachusetts-based sandwich chain, confirmed to WBZ NewsRadio that an an employee tested positive for Salmonella Typhi, also known as Typhoid Fever.

According to Doherty, all employees are being tested, and they hope to reopen within a day or two.

The restaurant said the illness is isolated to the Saugus location only.

The Massachusetts Department of Public Health confirmed a food handler tested positive for salmonella at the Saugus location, and said they were unaware of any cases of salmonella among customers.

"We are working closely with the health department in Saugus to take every measure to protect the public," the DPH said in a statement.

According to the Center For Disease Control, the illness can be life-threatening, and only affects about 350 people in the United States every year.

People who are actively sick with the illness can spread the bacteria to others.

Restaurant officials said that the Saugus Board of Health has already approved the store to reopen.
