WESTMINSTER, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — A 22-year-old man has died and multiple police officers are on administrative leave after an officer-involved shooting in Westminster, Mass., the Worcester County District Attorney's Office announced Tuesday.
The shooting happened around 4:42 p.m. Monday when Westminster Police officers arrived to a residence on South Ashburnham Road to serve an arrest warrant.
The suspect allegedly approached officers with a large knife, at which point police shot him, Worcester County District Attorney Joseph Early Jr. said in a statement. Officers rendered medical aid to him before he was taken to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced deceased.
No Westminster Police officers were injured.
Massachusetts State Police detectives and the Westminster Police Department are investigating.
The officers who were involved in the shooting were placed on administrative leave "in accordance with standard protocol pending the outcome of the investigation," the statement read.
Based on a review of court records, the arrest warrant being served Monday appears to have been in connection to an alleged probation violation after the suspect was arrested and charged with possessing child pornography in May 2025.
