NEWTON, Mass.(WBZ NewsRadio) — Police in Newton say carnivorous canines are being spotted throughout the city.

It's mating season for coyotes — which is why Newton police say naturally they're more active and visible this time of year. The winter storms and large amounts of snow have made getting around more difficult, forcing them to travel further for food. Frank from Newton says he sees the animals twice a week.

"What I do is I just stand still, try to make myself look bigger, and just hopefully it goes the other way," he said. "I've never seen this many before."

Police say they are not new to the community, but residents should take extra steps to discourage interactions. The coyotes' fear level may also have gone down as they ventured more into neighborhoods for food as they follow snow trails looking for their next meal. Police say don't leave food or garbage outside and keep an eye on pets.

"Yeah, that sounds absolutely correct. I see them all the time. I stay out of their way. They're big, ugly-looking things. It's actually a little frightening sometimes," Frank said.
