DIGHTON, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Police warn of a surfacing Internet scam involving the mobile payment app Venmo.

"You will receive a text message telling you your Venmo account is about to be charged and If you want to cancel the withdrawal, you need to log on and decline it," the Dighton Police Department said in a Facebook post.

The message then prompts the user to log into their account with their phone number and password, and then asks for more financial information such as the bankcard number used on the account.

Graphics and fonts associated with the fake email match Venmo, which makes it hard to recognize as a scam.

The police advise to use the Venmo app directly to avoid scams. They advise people who believe they did give information to the hoax to contact their bank or credit card lender.
