Rutland Police Detective Dies Of COVID-19

RUTLAND, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — A Rutland Police Detective has passed away after a month-long battle with COVID-19.

According to Rutland Police Department, 48-year-old Detective John Songy of Leicester died shortly before 1 a.m. on Friday, May 29th, after "a courageous and well-fought battle against the coronavirus."

Detective Songy was an eight-year veteran of the Rutland Police Department and had previously served with the Oakham Police Department.

By Friday morning, Rutland Police Department had their flags lowered to half staff in honor of Detective Songy.

Officials and law enforcement departments from across the state and the country also honored Detective Songy's memory and sent condolences to his loved ones, from Worcester County District Attorney Joseph D. Early Jr. to Oakboro Police Department in North Carolina.

Rutland Police Dept. said information on funeral services will be released as they become available.
