LOWELL, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — A Lowell man is dead after being shot on Spring Street Saturday night. The victim’s family identified the man as 30-year-old Jimmy Iem, who was the father to two young children.

A makeshift memorial has been set up in Iem's memory. Iem's brother, Tony, did not want to leave the memorial. Tony said he wanted to keep it safe like Iem kept him safe when they were growing up.

“I’ve always looked up to him and he’s always taken care of me,” Tony said. “Our childhood wasn’t the best. You know, there were times where he was raising me where it was just me and him.”

Iem had just returned from a Valentine’s Day getaway and had come to visit a friend near the corner of Walker Street and Spring Avenue.

“He actually brought his son here. He was here for like 20 minutes. He came out because he thought he left his phone in his car, and that’s when it happened,” Tony said. “He was just here for 20 minutes. That’s it."

Authorities said the incident occurred around 6:20 p.m. Iem was transported to a hospital with gunshot wounds, where he was later pronounced dead.

The incident is not suspected to have been a random occurrence, according to authorities. Police are currently investigating.
