After 99 Years, Weintraub's Jewish Deli In Worcester Closing

WORCESTER, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — A Jewish deli that has been a landmark in Worcester for nearly a century is going out of business.

Weintraub's has served customers on Water Street for 99 years, but owner David Mazrahi tells WBZ NewsRadio's Shari Small he's closing the doors for good, citing financial trouble.

"I have a lot of customers, they cried, they were very disappointed, they were sad," he said.

Mizrahi said the dwindling Jewish population, along with a health code violation a year ago, caused business to drop off.

Kathy, a regular customer, says she'll be sad to see it go—she's been coming to Weintraub's since she was a child. She says they made "the best matzah ball soup around."

"We're very sad, it's another Worcester institution closing," she said. "Our families would bring us down here after church on Sunday."

In the deli's place, a French crêpe café will be moving in.
