Massachusetts politicians are roundly condemning President Donald Trumpâs attacks on four liberal Democrats, including Rep. Ayanna Pressley, as blatantly racist and xenophobic.
Trump tweeted Sunday that the congresswomen of color should go back to the âtotally broken and crime infested places from which they came,â writing that they âcanât leave fast enough.â
While he didnât mention them by name, Trump was almost certainly referring to Pressley, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York, Ilhan Omar of Minnesota, and Rashida Tlaib of Michigan â the group of first-term congresswomen known as the âSquad.â All four are American citizens, and only Omar, from Somalia, is foreign-born.
Trumpâs Sunday attack followed an earlier insertion of the president into a back-and-forth between Ocasio-Cortez and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. And on Monday, Trump called for the congresswomen to âapologize.â
Trumpâs comments have drawn widespread condemnation from Democrats, including from Pelosi.Â
âTHIS is what racism looks like,â Pressley tweeted, adding that she and her colleagues arenât âgoing anywhere. Except back to DC to fight for the families you marginalize and vilify everyday.â
