6 Ways to Celebrate FAT TUESDAY in Boston

What is Fat Tuesday?

Fat Tuesday is the day before Ash Wednesday. It is also known as Mardi Gras Day or Shrove Day. It is a day when people eat all they want of everything and anything they want as the following day is Ash Wednesday, the beginning of a long fasting period for Christians.

What are you supposed to eat on Fat Tuesday?

Depending on where you're from, the fried foods traditionally eaten on Fat Tuesday, or Mardi Gras, range from the sweet like - doughnuts and King Cake, to the savory - like fried Po'Boys. In the UK, Fat Tuesday is Pancake Day, and in Poland, it's 'Paczki Day' which refers to the jelly-filled doughnuts they eat.

Here are some of MY Top Picks for Fat Tuesday Eats & Celebrations!

The Beehive Fat Tuesday Mardi Gras Celebration

I LOVE this cozy South End spot - known for its fantastic live music, as well as, tasty eats. On Tuesday, Alex Lee Clark will lead his big jazz band on the trumpet, performing tunes from down South as the kitchen serves up food and drink specials.

The Beehive is located at 541 Tremont Street in Boston. This event is FREE for all ages (21+ at the bar), but I would def call ahead to reserve a spot - check out their site HERE.

Kane's Donuts

Huh? YES - Kane's Donuts, for Fat Tuesday they are making up some special KING CAKE and offering a made-from-scratch king cake for Fat Tuesday. The cake is about the size of the the store’s coffee rolls, and its recipe mirrors those treats as well. The decorated cake (plastic baby and all) will be available at both Kane’s locations from Saturday, February 25, through Mardi Gras.

Check them out for $15 - Kane’s Donuts has two locations at:

Two International Pl., 90 Oliver St., Boston and at 120 Lincoln Ave. in Saugus or online kanesdonuts.com

Darryl's Corner Bar & Kitchen

It wouldn't be a Fat Tuesday celebration without a stop into Darryl's. On Fat Tuesday, this restaurant will add king cake to its Southern-rooted menu of catfish and gator tacos. And if the spot’s rocking Sunday jazz brunch is any indication, we can expect an authentic Mardi Gras bash in tow.

Darryl's is located at 604 Columbus Ave., South End, 617-536-1100, dcbkboston.com
